Internship at Hotel Palacio Del Carmen
Working at Hotel Palacio del Carmen in Santiago de Compostela while studying abroad was one of the most impactful parts of my time abroad. From mid-March to late April, I was part of a small but dedicated team in a beautiful hotel tucked away near the historic center, with a peaceful garden in the back and a stunning view of the cathedral. Sixteen cats even lived in that garden, it felt like a hidden little world back there that was full of charm and character.
Each morning I started in the breakfast buffet, and later moved to reception, where I greeted guests, helped with luggage, and practiced my Spanish daily. My colleagues were incredibly kind and patient, showing me how to check guests in and out and activate room keys. As the weeks passed, I gained confidence and began helping with English tasks too like responding to emails or translating for guests who didn’t speak Spanish.
Many of the guests were pilgrims finishing the Camino de Santiago, and it was amazing to meet people from all over the world, all with different stories. When I first started, the hotel was fairly quiet, but by the end, it was busy with events and full of life, just like my own journey during the program.
This internship gave me a real sense of purpose and connection. It wasn’t just about learning hospitality, it was about being part of something, growing through new challenges, and discovering how meaningful it can be to help others feel welcome no matter where they’re from.
